PURE ALOHA

Uncle Clay’s Magic Icees and More

Uncle Clay had a dream. Since childhood, Uncle Clay wanted to own the very candy and crack seed shop he grew up going to everyday afterschool. He remembers often telling his father how much he wanted to run that shop.

To his siblings, it seemed like a pipe dream but eventually, after many years of talking and dreaming and more talking and more dreaming, he bungee jumped.

That was thirteen years ago.

As the shop’s fourth proprietor, Uncle Clay whips up his Magic Icees not just after school but seven days a week, serving each one with two special ingredients: his “secret magic creamy sauce” and lots of pure aloha.

And the kids drop in regularly, if not daily, greeting Uncle Clay with smiles and giggles.

Uncle Clay has transformed our favorite slushy drink into nearly a dozen unique concoctions. Especially on hot summer days, Uncle Clay’s Magic Icees is the “new shave ice.” His menu runs the gamut from the simple and basic Li Hing Delight and Creamy Delight to wildly flavorful blends mixing local ingredients such as mochi crunch, lychee, azuki beans, freshly grated coconut, and even hot chili sauce.

But beyond his Magic Icees, Uncle Clay offers something even more special: his stories. In true “talk story” fashion, Uncle Clay abundantly shares wisdom, laughter, and his Pure Aloha oath philosophy in every sentence, joke, compliment, or anecdote he offers.

For those who thought that the little crack seed and candy shop of yesteryear was gone, visit Uncle Clay’s, located in Aina Haina Shopping Center, or check it out at www.uncleclays.com.
